Steifman's Four Knocks Lead Way as UMW Baseball Blows By Methodist, 14-3

The University of Mary Washington baseball team had little trouble in its 14-3 victory in seven innings over Methodist to conclude the Methodist University Invite on Sunday afternoon in Fayetteville, N.C.

The Eagles used Brendan McComber's five innings of shutout ball and a seven-run third inning to propel them to the victory as Burke Steifman led the way with four base knocks on offense.

In the second inning, Eric Powell gave UMW an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single, then Mary Washington jumped out to an 8-0 lead after a seven-run third that happened like this: Noah Roots began the scoring by scoring on a passed ball, then George Rizzo singled with the bases loaded to score Bobby Ayscue. Oliver Martin kept the hit parade moving with an RBI knock to push the lead to 5-0, which was followed by Ryan Schwarz's two-RBI single to extend the lead, 7-0.

And then Steifman ended the scoring with an RBI single to push the lead 8-0. In the fourth, UMW added six more when Martin scored on a wild pitch, then Scharz added a pair more on a two-RBI single, while Ty Lowe did the same. And finally, Noah Roots added another on an RBI single to push the lead to 14-0.

McComber finished off his five innings of shutout ball, yielding just one knock and striking out five. Griffin Graham worked the sixth, while Connor Hassan struck out three in the seventh to polish off the game.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday against Lynchburg. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
