An early sixth inning error proved costly in tht University of Mary Washington baseball team's 7-2 loss to Lynchburg on Wednesday evening in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles fell behind in the first inning to the Hornets, 2-0, before
Eric Powell's RBI double in the second brought them to within one, then
Noah Roots' RBI double tied the score in the third.
Gavin Riley, after a shaky first inning, bounced back to fire five innings of two-run ball as he struck out a batter, while working around three walks and a base hit before departing in the sixth. As the sixth began, the Eagles made an error that they wouldn't recover from.
The Hornets' lead-off batter reached before a double and a one-out RBI single drove both of the runners home to give Lynchburg the lead, 4-2. Another error with a runner on third allowed the Hornets to add another to their lead in the inning, 5-2.
In the eighth, the Hornets added two more runs to extend their lead to five, 7-2. The Eagles, though had their chances as
Tommy Martinez doubled with a runner on first, then
Eric Powell walked to load the bases in the eighth, but a groundout to second by the next batter ended any shot of a UMW rally.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. against Houghton.
