The 26th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team edged Stevens Institute of Technology, 4-3, and swept Virginia Wesleyan University, 7-0, on Sunday at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center. The Eagles improve to 6-1 on the season.
In the morning Stevens match, the Eagles dropped the doubles point, but did score a 7-6 win at one, with
Trevor Rein and
Jack Riordan picking up the W.
In singles, the Eagles gained victories from Rein at two, 6-0, 6-2, and
Ryan King at five, 6-1, 6-2 to gain the lead.
Matt Scott's 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win at six put the Eagles on the brink of victory, and
Evan Fisher scored a 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 win for the clinching point.
Against Va. Wesleyan, UMW gained the doubles point, as Rein and Riordan gained a 6-2 win at one, and Will Fromhrz and Scott scored a 6-2 win at three.
The Eagles swept the singles matches, as Rein finished his undefeated day with a 6-3, 7-5 win at one, King won, 6-2, 7-6 at two, and Riordan ook a 6-3, 6-3 decision at three. Scott won at four, 6-1, 6-3,
Rithik Manchala at five (4-6, 6-2, 6-4), and
Drew Campbell at six, 7-6, 6-4.
The Eagles will return to action a week from Sunday, as they visit Caltech and Chapman University.
