Ashley Firesheets scored four goals and the defense again stood out as the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated Shenandoah University, 11-6, on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Eagles started swiftly, scoring four goals in the first quarter after allowing the opening tally in the opening minutes. Senior Tori Mueller started the scoring at 6:46, and Firesheets scored on a
Sadie Laughlin assist at 6:28 to put UMW on top. Senior
Molly Daw added a goal at 1:28, and soph
Abigail Fisher added another with 18 seconds left.
In the second, the Hornets scored early on a free position goal, but Daw added her second of the day with 6:41 remaining.
The third quarter saw the Eagles extend the lead on scores from Daw at 11:13, and from frosh
Ava Windham at 2:32. The Hornets found the nets late to draw to within 7-3 entering the fourth.
Firesheets opened the fourth with a tally assisted from Fisher at 10:15, and Fisher added another on a Daw assist at 8:32. After an SU score, Firesheets scored on a
Kimber Konen assist at 7:12. The Hornets scored a pair of goals before Firesheets capped the scoring in the waning seconds.
Shenandoah led in shots, 27-23, as well as ground balls, 13-12.
Allison Carolan made six saves in 30 minutes, nd
Cece Van Blenis added seven in the second half.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Washington College at 5:00 p.m.
