The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated Washington College, 14-12, on Wednesday evening at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season.
Sophomore
Abigail Fisher put the Eagles ahead with a pair of goals in the opening five minutes. After a Shorewomen score, senior
Molly Daw added a pair of her own, including one with one second left in the quarter, and the Eagles led, 4-1, after 15 minutes.
In the second, the Eagles reeled off five scores in the opening 3:50.
Sadie Laughlin started the run at 14:36, and junior
Ashley Firesheets added the next two, at 14:01 and 12:35.
Taylar Hackney scored at 12:02, and Firesheets added her third in four minutes at 11:10. From there, Washington College closed the frame with five straight, and added another to open the third in drawing to within 9-7.
Fisher stopped the run for UMW at 12:35 of the third, and, after another WAC score, Daw started a four-goal Eagle spurt. Tori Mueller and Fisher followed with goals, before Daw added another, putting the Eagles ahead, 14-8.
Washington scored two early and two late, but the Eagles were able to run out the clock for the two-goal win.
UMW led in shots, 34-25, while Washington led in ground balls, 20-18. UMW goalkeeper
Cece Van Blenis made four saves in 30 minutes, and
Allison Carolan added two in the second half.
The Eagles will be back in action on March 1 when they visit Messiah University at noon.
