The University of Mary Washington baseball team took down Hanover in Game 1 of the Methodist University Tournament on Saturday in Fayetteville, N.C., 10-2.
The Eagles jumped out to an early third inning lead, followed by
Justin Ritz's five no-hit innings in the victory. In the third,
Jacob Christenbury doubled home
George Rizzo to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead, which was followed by a two-run fifth. In the fifth,
Tommy Martinez doubled home
Oliver Martin, then
Noah Roots reached on an error, which allowed Martinez to score.
Ritz finished off the bottom of the fifth with his second consecutive hitless outing (nine total innings) after striking out six and walking a pair of batters. The Eagles gave
Gavin Riley some insurance when they scored three more runs in the top of the sixth. Christenbury reached on an error, which allowed
Oliver Martin to score, then
Ryan Schwarz doubled home Christenbury, which was followed by Martinez's RBI double to increase the lead to 6-0.
Riley threw a scoreless sixth, setting up
Eric Powell's two-run home run (the first of his career) to extend the Eagles' lead to 8-0 in the top of the seventh. Hanover finally got on the board with a run in the seventh, but it was
Ty Lowe's RBI single that stalled the Panther momentum in the eighth, then
Luke Guerzon scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 10-1.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday night against Hartford. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
