UMW Men's Basketball Edges UC Santa Cruz Late, 64-62

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team used a go-ahead layup from senior Zack Blue wih 11 seconds remaining in regulation to defeat the University of California Santa Cruz, 64-62, on Sunday afternoon in a match up between Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference schools in Newport News, Va. on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 8-11 on the season.

In the opening half, the Eagles jumped ahead with a three-pointer from first year Jose Fudd at 13:55 remaining, and built their lead to six, at 15-9, on a Kye Robinson three pointer with 12:05 left. The Banana Slugs knotted the score at 17-17 with 10:08 on the clock, but Fudd answered with another three pointer, and the Eagles built the margin to seven points on a Colin Mitchell layup with 3:29 to go. The Eagles led by four at halftime, 33-29.

The early going in the second half saw UMW up the lead to five before the Slugs knotted the score at 38-38 with 16:08 left. Santa Cruz grabbed the lead and the game remained a one-score contest for the following few minutes. With 8:40 left, Fudd added another three, and Blue netted a pair of free throws to give UMW a 49-44 edge. 

The UMW lead swelled to seven at 51-44 with 7:17 left, before the Slugs went on a 10-2 run to grab a 54-53 lead with 4:53 remaining. The teams then traded the lead twice with three tis over the next few minutes, and the score stood tied at 60-60 with 2:30 to go. Sophomore Jay Randall connected on a pair of free throws to give UMW the lead with 58 seconds left, before UCSC knotted he score with a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left. Blue's lay in with 11 seconds left put the Eagles up, 64-62, before UCSC's last-second three point try misfired.

Randall led he Eagles wih 23 points on 9-13 shooting, while Robinson also reachd double figures with 11 points. Blue led with eight assists in addition to he winning bucket.

UMW made 24-56 shots from the floor (42.9%), making 7-22 three point baskets and 9-9 free throws. Santa Cruz shot 24-52 (46.2%), making 6-22 three pointers and 8-11 free throws.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Marymount University at 7:00 p.m.
