The University of Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader with Sweet Briar, losing the season opener (11-10) before winning the nightcap (8-3) in Fredericksburg, Va. on Tuesday afternoon.
Game 1
The Eagles trailed by two early in game 1 when
Shelby Presgrave scored on a pass ball to cut the deficit in half. Then, UMW who trailed by three (4-1), scored two runs in the fourth when
Emily Angel scored on a throwing error by the Vixen's catcher. And then
Emily Mousso scored Presgrave on a sacrifice bunt to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Vixens scored four in the fourth to extend their lead to 8-3, but the Eagles scored once in the bottom half before Sweet Briar scored twice more in the sixth. But then, UMW mounted a comeback with a six-run sixth, starting with
Hannah Steele's sac fly, followed by a two-RBI single from
Hailee Danneker.
Emily Angel then singled home a run, while Presgrave knocked home a pair to tie the score at 10 on an RBI triple.
The Vixens then scored once more in the eighth to come away with the victory.
Game 2
In Game 2, the Eagles ran away with the win when they scored twice in the second on a Presgrave RBI single, then a Mousso ground out that scored Presgrave.
In the third,
Kennedy Darling scored
Brigid Ward on a ground out to increase UMW's lead to three. In the fourth, SBC cut into the lead, 3-1, before
Linsey Spillman singled home a run, then Ward singled home two more runs. While, Steele added another with an RBI.
Cierra Foss tossed a complete game in the Eagles victory.
