The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse tam opened the season in grand fashion, topping Virginia State University, 20-3, on Friday afternoon in Peteersburg, Va. The Eagles saw 15 different players score goals, including five with two scores each.
UMW started swiftly, building a 7-1 lead through the first quarter. Sophomore
Abigail Fisher opened the scoring on a Tori Mueller assist at 13:08, and, after a VSU goal, Fisher assisted on the next two goals, coming from
Molly Daw and Mueller. The lead swelled to 4-1 on a
Sadie Laughlin goal at 10:40, and
Taylar Hackney followed at 7:11 on a feed from
Ashley Firesheets.
Madeline Stauder scored on a Hackney assist, and Daw scored unassisted with 3:12 left to give the Eagles a 7-1 advantage.
In the second quarter, first year
Summerlin Gates started the scoring at 12:56 on a Fisher pass, and after another VSU goal, Ava WIndham and Hackney each scored unassisted. Firesheets scored on a Mueller assist and
Anna Dube capped the first half with 1:00 remaining in th second.
Kimber Konen gave the Eagles a 13-3 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the third, with goals following from Dube,
Molly Ryan Gates, Schroeder, Windham, and Mueller. First years
Gracie Fugleberg and
Emma Walsh each scored in the fourth.
Mueller led the Eagles with two goals and five assists, while Fisher scored one goal and added three assists. The Eagles led in shots, 27-8, and ground balls, 21-9.
Allison Carolan had two saves and
Adrianna Hernandez one in goal for the Eagles, who will be back in action on Tuesday night at Randolph-Macon College at 7:00 p.m.
