It took a while, but when
Noah Roots homered in the fifth inning of the University of Mary Washington's 10-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite on Monday afternoon, the runs kept on coming and didn't stop in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles and Royals were deadlocked through the first four-and-a-half innings as
Gavin Riley gave the Eagles three innings of one-hit ball before handing the baseball over to
Justin Ritz for the fourth and fifth innings. Ritz worked around a lead-off base runner, who reached on an error, to set the stage for Roots in the fifth.
With an out, Roots took a hack and sent the baseball flying over the right field wall, on top of the grass hill that over looks Earl V. Dickinson Stadium to give UMW a 1-0 lead. After Roots' homer,
Bobby Ayscue reached on a swinging bunt, then
George Rizzo walked to put runners on second and third before
Oliver Martin singled with two outs to score Ayscue and extend UMW's lead to a pair.Â
Jacob Christenbury reached on a walk to put runners on first and second, while Schwarz followed with a two-RBI single that scored both Martin and
George Rizzo to increase Mary Washington's lead to 4-0. And finally, as Schwarz stole second with Christenbury on third, the Royals shortstop bobbled the catcher's throw down that allowed Christenbury to score.
Mary Washington tacked on three more in the sixth when Ayscue doubled home
Ty Lowe, while
Eric Powell and Rizzo followed with sacrifice flies to extend Mary Washington's lead to eight. And in the seventh, Schwarz doubled home Christenbury, before Ayscue doubled and scored on a passed ball to finish off the afternoon for UMW.
Ritz went on to finish off the sixth and seventh innings to pick up the victory, while
Griffin Graham worked around a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to preserve the shutout. And in the ninth,
Connor Hassan finished off the Royals by facing the minimum.
The Eagles are back in action this weekend with a series with Franklin & Marshall for a series on Saturday and Sunday.
