Sophomore guard
Kye Robinson scored a game-high 31 points to lead the sixth-ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to an 88-74 victory over Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to a school-record 8-0.
Dickinson battled the Eagles tough, particularly in the opening minutes. The Eagles found themselves trailing, 17-13, with 10:56 left in the first half, and again at 23-19 minutes later. From there, UMW used a pair of Robinson free throws and another from
Kaden Bates, before a three-point play from
Jadon Burgess gave the Eagles the lead back, at 25-23, with 8:04 left in the half.Â
A Burgess three pointer and layup upped the margin to 31-26, and the Eagles slowly began to advance the lead to double figures, with Robinson's jumper at the buzzer extending the margin to 46-36.
In the second half, the Eagles started swiftly, pushing the margin to 19, at 58-39, with 14:33 left, before the Red Devils heated up from beyond the three-point line. Dickinson connected on nine three pointers over the bulk of the second half, with three players connecting to pull the guests back to within 77-72 with 3:29 remaining,
But the Eagles responded, as a Josh Seworder layup out of a timeout started a 9-0 run, keyed by five points from
Hasan Hammad, and the lead returned to 86-72 on a Bates free throw with 30 seconds left.Â
Robinson shot 11-19 from the field, making a pair of three-point shots and went 7-9 from the free throw line, and added a team-high eight rebounds. Burgess scored 18 points on 6-9 shooting with three three-pointers, and Hammad added 12 with a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line,
UMW shot 29-60 from the floor (48.3%), making 8-20 three point tries and 22-29 free throws. Dickinson shot 25-57 (43.9%), making 14-32 three point attempts and 10-17 free throws. Dickinson outrebounded UMW, 40-35.
The Eagles will be back in action on December 15, as they host North Carolina Wesleyan University at 5:00 p.m.
