Young's Career-High 22, Tight Defense Lift #5 UMW Men's Basketball Past NC Wesleyan, 75-46

Sophomore guard Ulysses Young tied a career high with 22 points, and a tough Eagle defense limited North Carolina Wesleyan University to 46 points in a 75-46 victory for the fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team on Monday evening at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles run their season opening win streak to nine.

The visiting Bishops started the game on a 7-2 run over the opening 3:53, but the Eagles righted the ship with a 14-4 stretch over the next 2:14, with five different players scoring. After a three pointer from junior Kaden Bates, sophomore Kye Robinson connected on a pair of free throws to build the lead to double figures at 23-13, and a pair of three pointers from Young expanded the margin to 29-16 with 3:35 left in the first. The Bishops trimmed the margin to nine, before another Young triple gave the Eagles a 34-22 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Eagles grew the spread to 18 with Young's fourth three pointer with 14:17 left, and another pair of back-to-back threes from Young upped the lead to 25, at 54-29, with 10:28 remaining. UMW saw six different players down the stretch in the 75-46 victory.

Young scored 22 points on 8-16 shooting, including 6-9 from three-point range. Robinson scored 12 points and added a team-high seven assists, while Bates scored 11 points and added nine rebounds and three steals.

The Eagles shot 45.3% from the floor (29-64), making 12-24 three point attempts and 5-8 free throws. NC Wesleyan shot 33.3% (17-51), making 4-15 three point tries and 8-11 free throws. UMW held a 40-32 rebounding edge, and forced 16 turnovers.
