The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team took down Cedar Crest on Tuesday afternoon, 64-50, in Bethlehem, PA to conclude the Steel Club Classic. First-year forward
Ainsley Phillips earned All-Tournament Team honors after scoring 24 points and coming away with 17 rebounds in the Eagles' two games.
After a close first quarter tied at 13 once it concluded, the Eagles began to pull away in the second after out-scoring the Falcons by six, 18-13, to take a 31-25 lead into the break. In the second period, UMW rebounded to shoot 7-for-16 from the floor (43.8%) that included a pair of 3-pointer's, one each from guards
Maddy Jenisch and
Emma Terry. And in the final two periods, the Eagles put the game to rest -- coming away with the 15-point victory.
The Eagles' defense was all over the Cedar Crest offense as they came away with 17 steals, forcing 23 turnovers.
McKenna Huff came away with five, while
Rileigh Weaver and
Jenna Steadman had three each. Jenisch, Terry, and Phillips all recorded a block each as the rest of the defense held the Falcons to just a 17-of-58 (29.3%) clip from the floor during the entirety and a 2-for-12 line from deep in the second half. Too, UMW controlled the rebounding battle by a large margin, 51-38, coming away with nearly as many defensive rebounds (33) as Cedar Crest had total.
On the offensive end, UMW was 25-for-65 from the floor (38.5%), which included nailing five 3-pointer's and 19 assists on th Eagles' 25 baskets. Weaver led the way in scoring for the Eagles with 14 points on a 5-for-10 game from the floor, while Phillips came away with 11 points.
Julianna Fisher nailed four of her five attempts from the floor -- with a pair of free throws -- to score 10 points.
The Eagles are back in action in Fredericksburg to open the New Year on Jan. 3. Tip-off against Hood College is set for 1 p.m.
