#5 UMW Men's Basketball Rolls Past #12 Va. Wesleyan, 89-48

Torrid shooting and pressure defense lifted the fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to an 89-48 victory over 12th ranked Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 11-1 on the season.

The Marlins opened with a 4-2 lead with 16:19 remaining in the first, but UMW responded with a 19-0 run over the next five minutes. Sophomore guard Kye Robinson led the way with nine points in the run, with Ulysses Young and Hasan Hammad adding three pointers. After a Kaden Bates basket, Young connected for another three to up the margin to 26-7 with 9:38 left, and Bates made a layup with 7:15 to go in the half to up the margin to 35-15. UMW led, 45-28, at intermission, after shooting 16-26 from the floor, including 6-12 from long distance.

In the second half, the Eagles not only stayed hot shooting, but actually shot even better, making 18-28 shots (64.3%). The Eagles led, 62-43, with 11:18 left, before going on another big run, outscoring the Marlins, 22-1 over the next seven minutes. Robinson scored 11 in the run, with Young adding seven. Both teams subbed the starters out over the last four minutes, with the Eagles holding a 41-point victory at the final horn.

Robinson led all scorers with 29 points on 10-13 shooting from the field and 8-10 from the line. Young scored 20 on 8-11 shooting, with three three-pointers. Junior Jay Randall scored 11 points and led with eight rebounds, and Robinson and Young each dished out five assists. Young had seven steals, and Bates added six to go with eight points and five rebounds.

The Eagles shot 34-54 from the field (63.0%), making 8-17 three point attempts and 13-17 free throws. Virginia Wesleyan shot 18-54 from the floor (33.3%), making 9-30 three point tries and 3-6 free throws. The Eagles led, 32-29, in rebounds, and caused 17 Marlin turnovers while committing just five.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, when they visit Catholic University at 2:00 p.m.
