The sixth ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team used a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive effort in defeating Gettysburg College, 65-52, on wednesday night in Gettysburg, Pa. The Eagles improve to 7-0 to start the season for the first time in program history, eclipsing the 6-0 start of the 2006-07 squad.
The Eagles built a 31-26 halftime edge, and, after the Bullets trimmed the margin to 42-41, with 10:33 remaining in the contest, went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes. UMW cruised to the 13-point margin of victory.
Sophomore
Kye Robinson, who ranks fifth in the nation in scoring, led the Eagles with 19 points on 9-15 shooting, while juniors
Jay Randall and
Jadon Burgess each scored 16, with Burgess grabbing a team-high eight rebounds and Randall seven.Â
The Eagles shot 50% from the floor (28-56), making 4-11 three point opportunities and 5-8 free throws. Gettysburg shot just 30.6% (19-62), with 7-27 on three point shots and 7-12 on free throws to their ledger. Each team grabbed 35 rebounds in the game.
Mary Washington will return home on Saturday to face Dickinson College as part of a traditional doubleheader with the Eagle women. The men will tip off at 4:00 p.m.
