The University of Mary Washington women's basketball game got a big boost from
Rileigh Weaver, who netted her first double-double of the season after scoring 15 points and coming away with 11 rebounds in UMW's 63-56 victory over Bridgewater (RV) on Wednesday evening in Fredericksburg.
The Eagles jumped out to a one-point lead by the end of the first quarter, 11-10, then used a big second quarter to propel them in front of Bridgewater, 32-22, by the end of the half. UMW built its lead to 13 by the end of the third, ensuring that they'd come away with the victory by the final buzzer.
Leading by one early in the second quarter, 13-12, UMW used a 13-3 run over three-and-a-half minutes to push the lead to 26-15, beginning with Weaver's layup that put UMW up for good and finishing with another Weaver layup.
Jenna Steadman recorded a 3-pointer and a layup, while
Emma Terry also netted a trey and
Maddy Jenisch added a layup during the Eagles' big run.
Steadman scored 13 on 5-for-9 shooting that included a pair of 3-pointer's, while
Juliona Mabie and Jenisch each contributed to the win with nine each.
The Eagles, plainly, had a hard time missing the basket on Wednesday, shooting nearly 50% (26-53) and made five 3-pointer's. Too, UMW was tough on the boards, leading by six, 35-29. On defense, they hounded Bridgewater, who committed 17 turnovers and had a pair of their shots blocked, while shooting just 21-of-53 (39.6%) and was just 2-for-13 from deep.
The Eagle are back in action on Dec. 29 at 12 p.m. against Brooklyn College in Bethlehem, PA.
