The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team fell to Santa Cruz in the Coast-to-Coast Conference semifinals on Friday afternoon in Salisbury, Md., 1-0
The Banana Slugs took an early led in the seventh minute on a penalty kick as the goal scorer was dragged down in the box prior to the goal. The Eagles had a few chances to tie the game in the first half when
Naomi Knight had a free kick that hit the top of the crossbar in the 33rd minute. Knight, again, was close to netting the tying goal right before the half, but once again, her free kick was off the post.
In the first half, UMW and Santa Cruz tied in shots, 4-4, but in the second the Eagles let more shots fire at the net. UMW took nine shots in the second half, while the Banana Slugs had just one. The Eagles had a pair of chances late as both
Ellen Shine and
Maci Landel's final two shots were saved by the Santa Cruz keeper.
For the day,
Taylor Garofalo led the way in shots with three, while
Madison Bauserman, Landel, Knight, and Shine had a pair each.
The Eagles will wait to see where they are headed in the NCAA Tournament on Monday during the afternoon's selection show.
