Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Shaw's Second Half Goal Enough in UMW Women's Soccer's First Round Upset Over No. 20 Vassar

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team upset No. 20 Vassar on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Women's Soccer Championships, 1-0, in Williamstown, Mass. The Eagles advance to tomorrow's second round matchup against No. 10 Williams College on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Eagles used Cassidy Shaw's second half score to push past the Brewers on Saturday. After a scoreless first half, Shaw inbounded the ball on a throw in to teammate Emma McMullen, who kicked it to Shaw at the top of the box. From just outside the left corner of the box, Shaw ripped a shot that found the upper-right quadrant of the back of the net.

The score was enough for the Eagles second ranked win of the season and their first NCAA Tournament game victory since 2019.

For the day, UMW out-shot Vassar by two goals, 13-11, and had five shots-on-goal compared to the Brewers three. The Eagles, too, led in corner kicks, 7-3. In the first half, UMW had eight shots, while playing more conservative defense in the second once Shaw scored in the 60th minute. Of Vassar's eight second half attempts, five came after Shaw's game-winner.

Keeper Emily Orn came up big for UMW, recording three second half saves to extend the Eagles season for at least another day. Skye Lawhun, Layla Royster, and Shaw came away with three shots each, while Maci Landel and Ellen Shine had a pair.

The Eagles will take on Williams College tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Williamstown, Mass. Video and live stats links will be available on UMWEagles.com.
