The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team advanced to the Sweet 16 on Sunday afternoon, upsetting No. 10 Williams in Williamstown, Mass.
The Eagles and Ephs drew at two apiece at the end of the second overtime, advancing on penalty kicks, 4-2. For UMW, next weekend will mark the first time the Eagles have appeared in the Sweet 16 since 2004 and eighth time in program history.
But to get there though, the Eagles had to get through No. 10 Williams on Sunday. And that was no easy task. The Ephs were the runners up in the NESCAC -- a conference that typically dominates NCAA Division III soccer -- falling to No. 3 Tufts last Sunday in the conference championship game. Then, they had little trouble against John Jay in the first round on Saturday, winning easily, 5-0.
The Eagles, meanwhile, had to grind their way through the last 30 minutes of yesterday's 1-0 victory against No. 20 Vassar after
Cassidy Shaw nailed the game-winner in the 61st minute. But it was clear UMW was up to the task.
After a scoreless first half, Shaw finished off her second goal of the weekend in the 51st minute to put the Eagles up 1-0. They were 10 minutes from a regulation victory before Williams tied the score in the 81st minute. Three minutes later, the Ephs took the lead.
From jubulation to heartbreak. But UMW decided that it wasn't done. Off of a pass from
Maci Landel,
Layla Royster scored the game-tying goal in the 87th minute to send the game into overtime.
Off to overtime the game went and after a pair of scoreless periods, the Eagles and Ephs lined up for penalty kicks.
The Ephs took the first kick, which was saved by keeper
Emily Orn.
Madison Bauserman took the first for UMW that sailed into the back of the net. The Ephs second try? Wasn't even near the goal as the ball missed the right post.
From there,
Ellen Shine made the second, followed by Landel who made the third. And with a chance to win it on the fourth try,
Naomi Knight nailed the game-winner to send the Eagles to the Sweet 16.
For the game, UMW was out-shot 30-8, but had five shots on goal -- making the most of its limited chances. The Ephs, meanwhile, had 10 shots-on-goal and had 16 corner kicks compared to UMW's none.
The Eagles, though, are the ones heading to the next round next weekend. They'll take on the winner of Penn State Harrisburg and Rowan, which kicks off at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday night.
More information about where the Eagles are headed will be made available on Sunday night.
