The University of Mary Washington volleyball team defeated Regent University, 3-1, on Tuesday night in a matchup between Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference members at Ron Rosner Arena. Set scores were 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 25-13; the Eagles improve to 9-21 on the season.
In the first, the Eagles gained an early 6-3 lead, but the Royals responded with five points to take an 8-7 lead. The lead swung back and forth with five lead changes, and the score stood tied at 23-23, before a kill from
Natalie Brown and an attack error gave the Eagles the set.Â
UMW jumped out to a 12-4 advantage in the second, and after a comeback by Regent, held a three-point cushion down the stretch in gaining a 25-21 win in the second. Regent took the third by making several runs midway through, but the Eagles answered with a decisive 25-13 win in the fourth.
The Eagles were led by Brown's 13 kills, while sophomore
Alice Holoubek added 11 kills without an error, and sophomore
Sarah Starling added 10. First year
Olivia Fortier posted 40 assists and seven service aces to go with four kills, and first year
Sierra Hunt added eight kills and 12 digs.
Aimee Abad added a team-high 14 digs, and Fortier added 10 digs.
UMW will close the regular season on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Randolph College at Ron Rosner Arena.
