The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team used a strong defensive effort and 27 points from sophomore guard
Kye Robinson to defeat eighth-ranked Carthage College, 68-57, on Saturday at the Great Lakes Shootout in Washington, Pa. The Eagles improve to 6-0 on the season.
Carthage jumped on top early, scoring the first five points en route to a 9-2 lead with 16:18 remaining. Five straight points from Robinson pulled the Eagles back to within 9-7, and UMW gained the lead with a Robinson free throw with 11:31 left, 15-14. Nine lead changes later, the score stood, fittingly, tied at 31 at halftime.
In the second half, UMW caught fire offensively, shooting 15-28 from the floor (3-6 from three-point land) and made 4-5 free throws, while limiting Carthage to just 10-34 shooting (3-20 on three pointers), and that became the difference in the game, as the Eagles outscored Carthage by 11 in the second half.
Robinson went 9-15 from the floor and 7-8 from the line en route to his game-high 27 points. Junior guard
Kaden Bates provided a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and freshman guard Josh Seworder added 10 points as well.Â
The Eagles shot 23-57 from the floor (40.4%), making 7-18 three point tries and 15-20 free throws. Carthage shot 21-64 (32.8%), making 5-28 three point attempts and 10-16 free throws. UMW outrebounded Carthage, 45-40.
UMW will be back in action on December 3 at Gettysburg College at 7:00 p.m.
