The 15th ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated Trine University, 72-57, on Friday afternoon at the Great Lakes Shootout hosted by Washington & Jefferson College. The Eagles run their season-opening win streak to five.
UMW built a 38-32 halftime edge, thanks mainly to red hot shooting from behind the three point arc in the opening 20 minutes, as the Eagles went 9-17 from deep in the first half. The Eagles, with the return from injury of junior
Jadon Burgess, saw the junior make four triples on the day.Â
The Eagles extended the lead to double figures right away in the second half, starting the frame with a 9-0 run over the first 4:15. UMW built a lead as large as 18 points before holding off Trine down the stretch for a comfortable 15-point win.
Sophomore guard
Kye Robinson led the Eagles with 23 points, and added six rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard
Ulysses Young scored 22 points on 8-11 shooting, including three three pointers, and Burgess scored 12 in his season debut. Junior
Kaden Bates led UMW with seven rebounds.
Mary Washington shot 26-62 from the floor (41.9%), making 11-25 three point attempts and 9-14 free throws. Trine shot 19-57 (33.3%), making 5-24 three point attempts and 14-22 free throws. Trine held a 39-37 rebounding edge.
