The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team used a career-high in points from
Ainsley Phillips and a clutch 3-pointer from
Dylan Wood in the final munute to down Allegheny, 70-63, in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Eagles started the game strong, scoring 26 points in the first quarter to the Gators' 14, but a strong second quarter from Allegheny netted the score back even at 36 at the half. The Eagles took a one-point lead entering the fourth -- and finally put the game away in the last two minutes of regulation.
Wood added 11 points for the Eagles, nailing the dagger 3-pointer to put UMW up by five with 2:12 to play before Allegheny had to foul for the rest of the game.
Jenna Steadman scored 10 on 4-of-9 shooting.
On the day, the Eagles were 38.8% from the floor (26-of-67) and knocked down more 3-pointer's than they missed as they were 8-of-14 (57.1%). They forced the Gators into 15 turnovers, coming away with 11 steals.
Allegheny shot just 20-of-73 (27.4%) fromt the floor and was 9-for-29 from deep (31%) and was able to keep it close with a 14-of-19 mark from the free throw line. The Eagles had the slight edge on the boards with a 50-48 advantage.
UMW is back in action on Friday at Randolph-Macon at 6 p.m. in Ashland, Va.
