UMW Women's Basketball Earns First Win This Season Over NC Wesleyan, 70-64

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team erased an eight point first quarter deficit to trounce NC Wesleyan on Wednesday evening, 70-64, in Rocky Mount, NC.

It was Jenna Steadman's career-high 17 points that led the way for UMW as the junior guard went 5-for-8 from the floor, which included a perfect 3-of-3 clip from deep. Maddy Jenisch's career-high 13 points followed Steadman's in the victory. Rileigh Weaver, too, added 12 points on the offensive end.

The Eagles got out to a slow start in the first quarter as it shot just 4-of-14 from the floor, while NC Wesleyan was 9-for-14. At the end of the period, UMW trailed by eight, 21-13. But that's when the Eagles began to click on offense. They'd outscore the Battling Bishops the rest of the way. In the second quarter, UMW took its first lead with 2:06 to go as Steadman nailed one of her 3-pointer's to give UMW a 29-27 lead.

But at the half, UMW trailed by a point, 30-29. In the third quarter, the Eagles began to put the game away as they outscored NC Wesleyan 21-17, then 20-17 in the final period. For the game, the Eagles shot better from the floor as they were 21-of-54 from the floor and 8-for-20 from deep (40%). They forced the Bishops into 21 turnovers, coming away with 10 steals -- both Emma Terry and Ainsley Phillips had three each. Too, UMW outrebounded NC Wesleyan, 44-38.

NC Wesleyan shot just 25-of-67 from the floor (37.3%) and 5-for-22 from deep (22.7%).

The Eagles are back in action on Friday evening against Chatham at 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh, PA.
