The 15th ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team overcame an eight-point deficit with 2:10 remaining in regulation to defeat Rowan University, 94-87, in overtime on Wednesday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.
The first half saw the Profs jump out to an early five point lead, but the tightly-contested game saw the lead change hands five times in the opening 20 minutes. The Eagles closed the first half on an 11-3 run to take a 40-35 advantage to the locker room at halftime.
In the second, UMW extended the lead to as many as seven, before three straight three pointers from Rowan tied the score at 58-58 with 11:25 remaining. The lead then changed hands five times in the next minutes, before Rowan went on an 8-2 run to push its lead to 79-71 with 2:10 left. Junior
Hasan Hammad followed with a three pointer, and
Kye Robinson added a layup and free throw to pull UMW to within 79-77 with 1:17 on the clock, and junior
Kaden Bates connected for a go-ahead three pointer with 45 seconds left.
UMW hit a free throw to up the margin to 81-79, before the Profs knotted the score with a jumper with five seconds left, and the game went to overtime.
In the extra frame, UMW started on an 11-0 run, led by six from Robinson, and the Eagles held on down the stretch with a pair of free throws.
Robinson led UMW with 25 points on 10-17 shooting, while junior
Jay Randall shot 10-11 from the floor en route to 23 points. Sophomore
Ulysses Young scored 15 points, Hammad added 14, and Bates scored 11. Randall led with nine rebounds and four assists.
The Eagles shot 34-64 from the field (53.1%), making 8-23 three point attempts and 18-33 free throws. Rowan shot 32-66 from the floor (48.5%), making 16-38 three point tries and 7-16 free throws. The Profs led the battle of the boards, outrebounding UMW, 46-35.
UMW will return to action on Sunday when the Eagles host Yeshiva University at 2:00 p.m..
