The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team used junior
Maci Landel's early second half goal to propel the team to an upset victory over No. 3 Christopher Newport on Saturday evening in Newport News, Va., 1-0
For the Eagles, they hand CNU its first regular season loss since 2019, while claiming their first ranked victory in 2025 after moving to 8-2-1 this fall. For UMW, it's the first win over the Captains since 2019 after upsetting them in the CAC semifinal round.
That was on home turf then. But on Saturday, though, the Eagles marched into Captains Field in Newport News and took care of business. They began Saturday night with a 2-1 shot advantage in the first 16 minutes, but neither were able to find the back of the net.
By halftime, the Eagles and Captains took a 3-3 shot mark and a scoreless tie into the locker room. But early in the second half, the Eagles finally broke through on the scoreboard.
After a foul, UMW was awarded a free kick, which senior
Natalie Anderson took at mid-field, sending the ball that bounced off a pair of CNU defenders at the top of the box and on to the right foot of
Ellen Shine. Shine chipped the ball into the box, placing it perfectly between the CNU keeper and Landel and from there, it was a foot race as Landel beat the Captains keeper into the net.
For the rest of the evening, the Eagles were able to stave off a few Captains chances, including a pair in the final minutes. Sophomore keeper
Emily Orn came away with five saves and her third career shutout.
All told, the Captains led in shots, 12-8, but tied in shots-on-goal with five each. For corners, CNU had more chances with seven, compared to UMW's one.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday against Dickinson at 7 p.m. in Fredericksburg, VA.
