Senior midfielder
Grayson Scott rattled home the game winner with 5:35 remaining in the fourth quarter, as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team came from behind to top Rhodes College, 2-1, on Saturday at a sun-drenched Battleground. The Eagles improve to 6-4 overall, and 1-0 in College Field Hockey Conference play.
Rhodes came out strong, and scored the game's first goal on a penalty corner just 6:23 into the game. From there, much of play occurred in the middle of the field, as neither team could score, nor barely offer a shot. Eagle defender
Caroline Porter made three defensive saves on the day, including one on a shot from across the crease early in the contest, and another by knocking a lofted shot on a penalty corner safely away.
The Eagles knotted the score on a goal from junior
Mackenzie Proffitt on a penalty corner sent out by sophomore Mackenzie Tutone with 1:10 left in the third quarter, and the Eagles survived a scrum in front of goal, with junior goalkeeper Tori WInans making several key stops to set the stage for Scott. The senior dribbled through several defenders and fired home a shot near post for the go-ahead score at 54:25.
Rhodes led in shots, 11-8, as well as penalty corners, 8-6. Winans made six saves for the Eagles.
UMW will return to action next Saturday, as the Eagles visit Meredith University at 1:00 p.m.
