Game Recap: Field Hockey |

UMW Field Hockey Falls to #1 Christopher Newport, 3-0

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to top-ranked Christopher Newport University in its penultimate game of the regular season on Wednesday evening at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 11-6 on the season.

The Captains jumped in front at the outset, scoring just 47 seconds into the game. After that tally, the bulk of the contest was played in the middle of the field, through the first and second quarters, as each team mustered just two shots apiece in the opening 30 minutes.

As they did in the first quarter, CNU started the third quarter with another quick strike, scoring 58 seconds into the frame. And again, like the first and second quarters, shots were at a premium at the outset. CNU outshot the Eagles, 6-3, in the third, and 7-1 in the fourth, finding the back of the cage with seven seconds left in the game to up the margin to 3-0.

Christopher Newport led in shots, 15-6, and penalty corners, 7-6. UMW goalkeeper Tori Winans made seven saves and senior defender Caroline Porter added a defensive save.

The Eagles will close the regular season on Sunday, as they host Sewanee at noon in Collegiate Field Hockey Conference action.
