Six different players scored goals in leading the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 6-0 victory over Sewanee in the regular season finale at the Battleground on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 12-6 overall, and 5-0 in Collegiate Field Hockey Conference action.
The Eagles opened the scoring with a score from junior
Katie Royle at 5:50. Royle brought a penalty corner into play to the top of the circle and
Mackenzie Proffitt, and redirected Proffitt's hard shot into the cage, giving the Eagles the early lead.
UMW scored again in the second, as sophomore
Makenzie Tutone scored on a rebound off the keeper's pads in traffic in the final minute before halftime. In the third, senior
Monique Lipton dribbled across the circle and fired the Eagles' third tally into the goal at 34:01. Just 45 seconds later, senior
Grayson Scott scored off a saved shot, one-on-one.
The Eagles gained fourth quarter goals from
Dyanela Rivarola at 47:12 on a
Lauren Boucher assist, and from Proffitt in traffic at 52:57.
Mary Washington led in shots, 19-7, and penalty corners, 8-5. Junior goalie
Tori Winans had four saves in 45 minutes, and senior
Erin Roy provided 15 minutes of shutout relief.
The Eagles will be the top seed in next weekend's Collegiate Field Hockey Conference Tournament in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. UMW will face the winner of Thursday's game between Centre College and Sewanee in the semifinal round on Friday at noon Eastern time.
Admission to the game at Marian University is $5 cash for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and children under 12 is free.
