The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team had little trouble in its 3-0 win over Salisbury on Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Va. on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Eagles moved to 9-2-3 this season.
After a scoreless 15 minutes to open play, the Eagles jumped out to their 3-0 lead in a span seven minutes, beginning with a goal from senior
Ellen Shine.
After taking a pass for a few steps,
Maci Landel found Shine just outside of the 18-yard box. With the ball on her right foot, Shine took the shot and nailed it, sending it past the Sea Gulls keeper for UMW's first score of the afternoon.
The Eagles' second score came just three minutes later in the 19th minute when
Amanda Dolan forced a Sea Gull turnover on the Eagles' defensive third of the field before finding
Emily Box in UMW's offensive third of the pitch. Box then found a streaming Landel, who pushed the ball passed Salisbury's keeper for the second goal.
And finally the last goal came on a corner kick when Landel found the head of
Naomi Knight for Knight's second goal of the season in the 24th minute of action, pushing the game out of reach for the Sea Gulls
UMW keeper
Emily Orn played the first 72 minutes in net before turning it over to
Kate Ronzoni for the final moments as the pair combined for the 10th shutout for UMW this season.
The Eagles led in shots, 16-2, with nine of UMW's shots coming on net. UMW, too, had four corners compared to Salisbury's zero.
UMW is back in action on Sunday for a matchup against Regent for Senior Day in Fredericksburg, Va. First touch is set for 2 p.m.
