The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to third-ranked Salisbury University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 7-5 on the season.
Salisbury jumped in front almost immediately, as the Sea Gulls scored just 16 seconds into play after charging forward on the opening pass. The deficit grew to 2-0 at 10:16, but the Eagles settled in defensively, which led to increased offensive opportunities in the second. The Eagles drew a penalty corner, but a defensive save on their first shot kept them off the board. UMW trailed, 2-0, at halftime.
The teams played an even contest throughout the third, until a late Salisbury score upped their margin to 3-0. The teams played the fourth to a scoreless stalemate.
Salisbury led in shots, 18-10, as well as penalty corners, 10-6. UMW junior goalkeeper
Tori Winans made 12 saves on the day, and senior defender
Caroline Porter added a pair of defensive saves on mid-air lofted shots off of penalty corners.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, as they return to Collegiate Field Hockey Conference action by hosting Concordia (Wisc.) University at noon for senior day.
