The University of Mary Washington volleyball team gained a 3-1 victory over Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. Game scores were 25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23; the Eagles improve to 6-17 on the season.
In each of the first two games, the Eagles sprinted out to quick leads, but the Hornets responded with runs of their own to pull close. In the first, UMW led, 4-0, before the Hornets reeled off eight of nine to grab the lead. Three straight points evened the score, and three straight kills from sophomore
Sarah Starling gave UMW an 11-9 edge. Shenadoah was able to knot the score at 16-16, before a 6-1 Eagle run gave them the lead for good.
In the second, the Eagles scored seven straight to open play, but Shenandoah bounced back with five of their own, and the Eagles used a 5-0 run to lead, 13-6. The Hornets tied the score at 15-15, and the game remained tight until a 6-2 UMW run ended the game.
The Hornets came from 22-19 down in the third to take a 26-24 game, before the Eagles responded in the fourth. UMW overcame a slow start to take their first lead at 15-14, and took six of the next eight points to grab a 21-17 lead. After Shenandoah again tied the score at 22-22, UMW scored three of the last four points with kills from
Natalie Brown and Starling for the win.
Starling led UMW with 20 kills, while Mackenzie WIlliams added 17.
Maura Munson scored 22 assists, and
Olivia Fortier added 18, and
Sydney Aiken led with 17 digs.
The Eagles will be back in action on October 18 with a pair of matches at Christopher Newport University.
