The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team has gotten back to its winning way after taking down Roanoke College on Wednesday, 2-1, in Fredericksburg, Va. -- marking three consecutive victories for UMW to bring its record to 6-5.
The Eagles got a pair of goals from
Elliot Berg to push them over the top of the Maroons on Wednesday.Â
The first goal came in the eighth minute when both
Gerrard Valoyi and
Jack Sturman found Berg from the left side of the net to the right side, where Berg headed the ball into the back of the net to give UMW a 1-0 lead.
That's where the score stood until halftime, but the Maroons came out to tie the match in the 49th minute, but that wouldn't last for long.
Berg's second goal came just a minute later as
Moises Argueta-Garcia chipped the ball into the left side of the box, allowing Berg to get his head on the ball and put his second goal into the back of the net.
Roanoke had plenty more chances to tie the game, but the backline and keeper
Tristan Kickbush held strong.
The Eagles led in shots, 20-13, but both teams were tied in shots-on-goal with seven apiece. Roanoke's keeper recorded five saves, while Kickbush had five of his own with the help of a team save in the first half.
UMW is back in action against No. 5 Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. First touch is set for 1 p.m.
