The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team was led by a fourth quarter surge and
Megan Baxter's career-high 19 points in the Eagles' win on Wednesday night over Marymount in Arlington, Va., 50-39.
Using a 19-point fourth period, Mary Washington was able to pull away from the Saints, who only trailed by five entering the final quarter. The Eagles got off to a slow start, scoring just seven points in the opening quarter and trailed by three entering the second. But in the next period, UMW held Marymount to just four points (2-of-12), while it scored 14 points of its own.
And in the second half, the Eagles outscored the Saints by four to come away with the low stress victory.
Baxter scored her 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting, while seven came from the free throw line. Too, Baxter added five assists and three steals in the win.
Leila Carter went 5-of-13 from the floor and accounted for 12 points, a career-best 11 rebounds, and three blocks for her first career double-double.
All told, UMW went 17-of-58 from the floor, which included a trio of 3-pointer's, while coming away with 18 turnovers, 10 steals, and five blocks on defense. Marymount, meanwhile, struggled on offense with a 14-of-56 mark from the floor (25%), and couldn't get much to fall from deep 4-of-16 (25%).
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday for Senior Day against Salisbury. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
