The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 78-67 decision at Johns Hopkins University on Monday evening in Baltimore, Md. The Eagles slip to 7-11 on the season.
The game stayed close from the opening tip, as the lead changed hands seven times (with six ties) in the opening nine minutes. Hopkins led by as many as six in the first half, at 34-28 with four minutes remaining, but UMW responded to take the lead on a
Kye Robinson basket with 2:09 left.
Hopkins grew the lead to four, but a three pointer from senior
Zack Blue trimmed the margin to one late. The Blue Jays added a late basket to take a three point lead to halftime.
In the second half, the host Jays heated up from the field, shooting 62.5%, including 4-8 from three-point range, to open up the lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Robinson again led the Eagles with 23 points, making 6-12 shots from the floor as well as all ten of his free throws. Blue scored 17 points on 6-11 shooting, and sophomore forward
Jay Randall added 13 points. Robinson also led with eight rebounds, while Randall and
Ulysses Young each had three steals.
The Eagles shot 23-53 from the field (43.4%), making 6-23 three point attempts and 15-19 free throws. Johns Hopkins shot 30-53 (56.6%), making 10-21 three point attempts and 8-12 free throws. The Blue Jays led in rebounding, 35-20, while the Eagles committed eight turnovers to 15 for the Blue Jays.
The Eagles will return to action on Sunday when they face UC Santa Cruz in Newport News, Va. at noon.
