Despite a 10-5 lead at the end of the first quarter over No. 10 Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon, the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to the Captains, 73-49, in Newport News, Va.
The Eagles held CNU to just a 2-of-20 (10%) mark from the floor in the first quarter and forced the Captains into five turnovers, while coming away with a steal before the first horn sounded. UMW, meanwhile, converted three field goals, which also included a 3-pointer.
But in the second quarter, the Captains outscored UMW, 31-13, before the halftime break and came away with a 36-23 lead. In the third quarter, though, Mary Washington and CNU both scored 15 points apiece as the Eagles were 6-of-15 from the floor, which included a trey. But in the end, the Captains were able to outscore UMW by 11 in the final period to come away with the victory.
Breana Valentine came away with a team-high 12 points on 3-of-10 shooting and a 3-pointer, and eight rebounds. Meanwhile, Riley Weaver as 4-of-7 from the floor, account for eight points and four rebounds and
Leila Carter scored six points on 3-of-6 shooting.
All told, the Eagles shot 19-of-57 (33.3%)Â from the floor and converted eight of their 25 treys (30%), coming away with seven blocks and three steals on the defensive end of the floor.
Mary Washington is back in action on Wednesday at Marymount in Arlington, Va. at 6 p.m.
