The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 58-52 decision at Franklin & Marshall College on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles slip to 6-6 on the season.
The Diplomats opened with the first six points of the game, before UMW answered with the next eight, and the lead changed hands three times before the Diplomats raced to a 20-13 advantage with 6:24 remaining in the first. A layup from
Kye Robinson and a three pointer from
Jadon Burgess cut the margin to two. A three from Robinson gave UMW a 24-23 edge with 4:00 left, but F&M ended the half on a 5-0 run to take a seven-point lead to halftime, 33-26.
In the second, the hosts upped the lead to 10 in the opening minutes, but a trio of free throws from Burgess with 9:51 left cut the margin to five, at 43-38. Baskets from
Kaden Bates and
Ulysses Young trimmed the margin to just two with 48 seconds left, but the Diplomats scored the final four points.
Bates led the Eagles with 16 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor, making one three pointer and 3-4 free throws. Robinson added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Eagles made 19-48 shots (39.6%), making 4-18 three point attempts and 10-13 free throws. F&M shot 38.5% (20-52), making 12-32 three point tries and 6-12 free throws. F&M led in rebounds, 36-29.
UMW will be back ina ction on Saturday when the Eagles host Catholic University at 3:00 p.m.
