The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped 63-51 decision to 24th ranked Catholic University on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles slip to 6-7 on the season.
The Eagles started swiftly, running up an 8-2 lead on five points from senior guard
Zack Blue and a three pointer from first year
Kye Robinson. Catholic responded, and 15 of the next 16 points in the game to take a 17-9 advantage with 13:43 left. CUA stayed hot, upping the margin to 24-9 with 7:27, but UMW chipped away, and used consecutive three pointers from Robinson and a pair from sophomore
Kaden Bates to cut the margin to 32-26 with 1:11 left, and both teams were scoreless until the first half buzzer.
In the second half, the Cardinals upped the margin to 13, at 43-30, with 14:17 left, and led by as many as 16, before the Eagles closed the game with four straight points.
Robinson led the Eagles with 21 points on 8-12 shooting, including 4-5 three point shooting. Bates scored 11 points, going 4-6, including 3-3 from deep.
Jadon Burgess was the third Eagle in double figures with 10 points, and added a team-high seven rebounds.
The Eagles shot 19-54 from the floor (35.2%), including 10-29 on three point shots, and made 3-4 free throws. Catholic shot 50% (25-50), making 7-18 three point tries and 6-8 free throws. Catholic outrebounded the Eagles, 39-22, while the Eagles committed just six turnovers, to 12 for the Cardinals.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday night when they host Bridgewater College at 7:00 p.m.
