Four Gain Double Figures as UMW Men's Basketball Falls to #10 Hampden-Sydney, 74-69

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 74-69 decision to 10th ranked Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles slip to 7-9 on the season.

In a tightly contested first half, in which neither side led by more than six points, the lead changed hands four times in the opening minutes, before the Tigers gained a five-point lead on a three pointer. A pair of free throws from senior Zack Blue and a layup and three pointer from first year Kye Robinson knotted the score at 11-11 with 14:39 left in the half. Again the Tigers edged ahead, and again UMW answered, as first year guard Ulysses Young added a three-pointer with 11:25 left to knot the score at 19-19.

A Robinson basket put UMW ahead, but then the lead swung back and forth three times in the following minutes. The Tigers went on an 8-2 run to take a 38-32 lead, but Jadon Burgess connected with a three with 1:15 left to draw UMW to within three, and the margin was 38-35 at intermission.

In the second, the score stood tied at 42-42 through four minutes of play, before a 10-2 HSC run propelled them into a 52-44 lead. Layups from Young and Jay Randall preceded a three from Robinson, as the Eagles drew to within 52-51 with 10:55 remaining. Hampden-Sydney built a double figure lead before UMW closed on a 5-1 run for the final 74-69 score.

Robinson led the Eagles with 23 points on 8-14 shooting, making 5-6 three point attempts, and 2-2 from the line. Young added 13 points on 6-8 shooting (1-2 from distance), and Blue and Burgess each scored 10. Robinson and Randall each had five rebounds, and Blue led with four assists.

The Eagles shot 24-49 from the floor (49%), making 9-22 three point attempts and 12-17 free throws. HSC shot 26-55 from the field (47.3%), making 10-23 three-point attempts and 12-18 free throws. The Tigers led in rebounding, 36-24.

UMW will return to action on Wednesday, when the Eagles visit Guilford College at 7:00 p.m.
