Zack Blue connected on a pair of free throws with three seconds left to gain the lead, but Dickinson College responded with a driving layup at the buzzer to defeat the University of Mary Washington, 72-71, on Monday evening in men's basketball action. The Eagles fall to 7-8 on the season.
The game started with each side trading points, and the game stood tied at 7-7 after five minutes. From there, the Red Devils edged ahead and held a slim lead throughout the first, by as many as eight before the Eagles trimmed the first half margin to four after a late three pointer from first year
Kye Robinson.
UMW came back in the second, outscoring the hosts, 41-38. The Eagles chipped away and eventually knotted the score at 50-50 with 11:15 remaining, on a
Cameron McCravy three pointer. Two baskets from sophomore
Jay Randall gave the Eagles the lead at 54-52 with 8:48 remaining.Â
The Eagles' lead grew to four on a three-point play from McCravy with 7:40 left, but a 10-0 Dickinson run gave them the lead at 68-62 with 2:58 to go. UMW scored nine of the next 11 to grab the 71-70 lead with eight seconds left. Dickinson netted the game-winner just before the final horn.
McCravy led the Eagles with 20 points, and sophomore
Jadon Burgess added 12. Robinson and Randall each netted 11, and Blue scored 10 as the fifth Eagles to reach doubl figures.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they host Hampden-Sydney College at 3:00 p.m.Â
