UMW Women's Basketball Marches Past Salisbury, 53-43

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team ended its four game skid with a 53-43 victory over Salisbury on Saturday afternoon in Salisbury, Md. Megan Baxter's 16 points and Leila Carter's 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting led the way for the Eagles in their win.

UMW trailed by two points, 7-5, midway through the first period before an 8-4 run gave way to a 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Salisbury countered with a 3-pointer and a 14-13 advantage before Carter converted a layup to give UMW a 15-14 lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half, and from there, Mary Washington never trailed again.

The Eagles went on to take a 25-22 lead into the intermission before pulling away with a 37-28 lead in the third quarter and then a outscored the Sea Gulls by three more points in the final period for the 53-43 victory.

All told, the Eagles were 19-of-60 from the floor, which included a 3-pointer in the first quarter that Baxter drained. On the defensive end, UMW held Salisbury to just a 14-of-52 mark from the floor (26.9%) and a 2-of-13 mark from deep (15.4%), which included an 0-for-8 clip in the second half.

Too, Mary Washington outrebounded the Seagulls 46-34, and of those rebounds, 22 of them were offensive boards for UMW, as it came away with 16 second chance points. With the Eagles' scrappy defensive play, Salisbury was forced into 25 turnovers, coming away with 10 total steals as Breana Valentine and Maddy Jenisch recorded three apiece.

The Eagles are back in action on Monday night against Johns Hopkins in the Anderson Center in Fredericksburg, Va. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
