Using a late score off of the foot of senior captain
Eliza Franklin, the Mary Washington women's soccer team got by Rutgers-Camden in a 1-0 thriller in Camden, N.J. on Saturday night.
The Eagles launched a barrage of shots in the second half at the Rutgers-Camden keeper -- 12 to be exact -- controlling the back portion of the match after neither team was able to generate much on offense in the first half. The Eagles, though, were the ones that took the most chances at the net -- 4-1 -- in the first half.
The defense, meanwhile, held strong for the entire evening as Rutgers-Camden was only able to get off three total shots, none of which were on net. The Eagles, too, controlled in corners, 5-3.
But after the match appeared that it was heading towards another draw for the Eagles, it was Franklin who was able to break the scoreless, giving UMW its second victory of the season to move to 2-0-1.
Maci Landel, who recorded four shots (two on goal) was the one to find Franklin as her assist set up the game-winning goal.
Emily Box led the team in total shots (five) and shots on goal (four), while
Jazzy Imanverdi and Franklin recorded three shots each.
Amanda Dolan also contributed with a shot-on-goal.
Adriana Thompson recorded her first clean sheet of the 2024 season -- the team's second shutout in as many games -- as she faced three total shots throughout the contest. The Eagles backline of
Cassidy Shaw,
Natalie Anderson,
Erin Reynolds,
Naomi Knight and Dolan stuffed the Rutgers-Camden offense all evening long as well.
