The No. 1 University of Mary Washington men's soccer team took a 2-0 lead over Messiah on Saturday afternoon, never looking back, in a 2-1 victory over the Falcons on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles used goals from
Diego Guzman and
Joel Albritton to get by Messiah. Guzman's score came just moments before halftime in the 42nd minute on a header that he recieved from
Jared Dubose.Â
UMW narrowly edged out Messiah in shots, 5-4, while keeper
Freddy Rogers recorded one save in the first half.
In the second, the offenses began to come to life a little bit more as Albritton was found by
Nelsar Castillo, ripping a shot from the top of the box in the 56th minute to put UMW up by two, 2-0. The Falcons countered with a 77th minute goal, but that was as close as they'd get.
All told, the Eagles led in shots, 15-4, though they only had four shots on goal all afternoon. Rogers recorded a pair of saves on the three shots-on-goal he faced. UMW, too, led in corner kicks, 4-1.
Mary Washington is back in action on Wednesday afternoon with a matchup against St. Mary's at the Soccer Stadium at 4 p.m.
