The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team fought hard against Lynchburg on Wednesday night, but fell to the Hornets, 1-0, in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles outshot Lynchburg by eight, 16-8, while taking 10 corner kicks -- compared to the Hornets' three. UMW took four shots in the first half before exploding for 12 more in the second half -- UMW had six total shots on goal.
Both teams took a scoreless tie into the end of half as UMW had one shot on net that was saved by a Lynchburg defender, who headed the ball out of the net. Eagles' keeper
Morgan Hicok recorded a pair of saves for UMW in the half.
Wednesday's lone score came off of a corner kick in the 63rd minute that found the right foot of the Hornet forward that gave Lynchburg a 1-0 lead. Mary Washington had three shots saved in the second half, unable to find the equalizer.
The Eagles are back in action at the Battleground on Satuday afternoon with a matchup against Hood College. First touch is set for 3:30 p.m.
