The No. 1 University of Mary Washington men's soccer team (8-0-0) took home a second thrilling top-10 victory with its 1-0 finish over Colorado College on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va.
The Eagles used a goal off the right foot of
Sammy Amorose in the 52nd minute to get by the Tigers after taking down No. 9 Rowan, 3-2, on Friday night in Fredericksburg.
But in the first half, the defenses were king as both teams notched just three shots each -- UMW took its first shot four minutes into the contest as Amorose's first shot of the day was saved by Colorado College's keeper. The next one came in the 21st minute when
Nelsar Castillo hit the crossbar, then the last one was in the final seconds in the first half when
Diego Guzman's attempt went right to the keeper.
Eagles' keeper
Freddy Rogers recorded a pair of saves in the first half on the three shots that were sent his way -- the third shot was blocked by a UMW defender.
It didn't take long, however, for the Eagles to breakthrough on the scoreboard as Amorose took a shot at the Tigers' keeper that was saved. The shot couldn't be corralled by CC's defense, so Amorose was able to take a second shot as the rebound landed at his feet for the lone goal of the day for either side.
The offense came alive in the second half as UMW recorded seven shots, while the Tigers' recorded five of their own. Rogers recorded one more save in the second half to come away with the victory and move his record to 8-0-0 this season.
Overall, the Eagles led in shots (10-8), shots on goal (4-3), and corner kicks (6-2).
Mary Washington is back in action on Wednesday night with a matchup with John Hopkins, who recently just fell out of the United Soccer Coaches' Top 25, in Baltimore, Md. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
