Using two goals, the No. 1 University of Mary Washington men's soccer team finished off a comeback victory over No. 9 Rowan on Friday night in Fredericksburg, Va., 3-2.
The Eagles used goals from
Jordy Santana (13'),Â
Gerrard Valoyi (66'), and
Jared Dubose (79') in the win as Santana used a header off of a pass from
Joel Albritton to give UMW an early 1-0 advantage.
That was the lone goal scored in the first half for either team as the Eagles' held a slim advantage in shots (12-10), leading in shots on goal as well, 9-2.
And it was the second half that saw a surge in offense as both teams scored twice in the half. Rowan would tie the game in the 53rd minute, before taking a 2-1 lead just six minutes later.
But it was the freshman Valoyi, who found the equalizer for the Eagles in the 66th minute, using a pass from the left off of the foot of
Sammy Amorose before finding the back of the net on the right side of the goal. Valoyi's goal marked the first of his career..
The Eagles had another first-time goal scorer break the tie in the 79th minute when DuBose, a transfer from Radford University, scored the game-winner off of a pass fromÂ
Julian Schmugge.
Freddy Rogers recorded four saves in the victory, running his recorded to a perfect 7-0-0 this season after playing all 90 minutes.
Overall, UMW led in shots (20-18), shots on goal (12-6), and corner kicks, 7-6.Â
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday evening for a second top 10 matchup this weekend. They'll take on No. 3 Colorado College in a neutral site matchup on the campus of Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va.
