Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 4 UMW Men's Soccer Starts Season 6-0 After Downing Rhodes on Sunday Afternoon, 4-1

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team moved to 6-0-0 to start the 2024 season after beating Rhodes College on Sunday afternoon at City Stadium in Richmond, Va. The Eagles finished the Preston Hirten Memorial Classic 2-0 after taking down Mount Union on Friday.

Gabe Francesconi found the back of the net twice, while Nelsar Castillo added his third goal of the weekend, and Jordy Santana scored the final goal to ice the Eagles' victory.

UMW, again, controlled the pace of play for most of the evening, out-shooting Rhodes by 17, 21-4 -- of the Eagles' 21 shots, 11 of them were on goal. Mary Washington also recorded all of Sunday's 10 corner kicks.

The scoring started on an unassisted in the 15th minute when Francesconi found the back of the net to put UMW up by one, 1-0. Just eight minutes later, it was Francesconi once again, who was found by Sammy Amorose, who recorded his second assist of the weekend.

Castillo's goal then scored by himself in the 36th minute, before he assisted on Santana's score in the 55th minute that put UMW up, 4-0.

Rhodes scored its only goal of the game in the 84th minute, by that time keeper Freddy Rogers had already checked out of the game after he recorded a pair of saves in just over 71 minutes of play.

The Eagles are back in action on Friday night at the Battleground Turf Stadium in Fredericksburg, Va. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
