Using a late goal from
Maci Landel, her first of the season, the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team drew with Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles surrendered an early goal in the first half to fall behind, but it was Landel on a free kick off of crossbar in the 83rd minute to tie the score at one apiece. The Eagles got off a few shots in the closing minutes, but that was as close as they'd get to winning Saturday's match.
Overall, UMW controlled most of the possession in the second half, outshooting the Marlins, 8-2, and 13-5 overall. Of the Eagles' 13 shots, five were on goal. UMW's keeper
Adriana Thompson recorded a pair of saves on the three shots that were sent her way.
Though Mary Washington controlled the ball for most of the second half, it was the Marlins who came away on top in corners, 6-3.
Eliza Franklin led the way with three total shots, while Landel and
Jazzy Imanverdi each had a pair of shots -- both of which were on goal.
Ellen Shine,
Erin Reynolds,
Emily Box,
Emma McMullan,
Autumn Hottle and
Brianna Kenealy all recorded attempts at the net for UMW.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday night at the Battleground Turf Field in a matchup against Bridgewater. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
