The University of Mary Washington field hockey team saw its season-opening three game win streak come to an end with a 2-0 loss to 10th ranked University of Lynchburg on Wednesday evening at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 3-1 on the season.
The first quarter saw the visiting Hornets bring strong pressure offensively early, as they gained three penalty corners in the opening minutes. But the Eagles withstood the charge, and kept the game scoreless through the first 15 minutes.
In the second quarter, play evened out, with the exception of Lynchburg's breakaway score 10 minutes before halftime. The Hornets added another in the third quarter, taking the rebound off a saved shot and depositing it into the Eagle goal to push the margin to 2-0.Â
The Eagle defense stood out, as sophomore goalkeeper
Tori Winans made 10 saves, while defender
Caroline Porter made two defensive saves, and
Elizabeth Stribling added another in the fourth quarter. Winans stopped a third quarter penalty stroke as well.
Lynchburg led in shots, 18-4, and also led in penalty corners, 8-4.Â
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit #16 Shenandoah University at noon.
