Only three student-athletes in the history of the Mary Washington men's soccer program had scored four goals in a single game. It only took one half for junior
Sammy Amorose to do the same as the midfielder recorded four of the Eagles' five goals on Sunday afternoon in a 5-2 thrashing of Rutgers-Newark in Fredericksburg, Va.
Amorose's first goal game off of a header from a feed from
Julian Schmugge in the 12th minute before
Carter Berg found
Gabe Francesconi for the Eagles' second score of the game five minutes later for Francesconi's first score of the 2024 season.
In the 21st minute, it was Amorose again on a feed from Joel Albrittion, who put UMW up by three goals, and then in the 22nd minute, Schmugge found Amorose for the second time that increased UMW's lead to four. And finally, Amorose recorded the program-tying goal on a pass from Albrittion as the Eagles led 5-0 at the 27:14 mark in the first half.
All told, Amorose scored four, while Francesconi scored in between Amorose's first and second goal. Both Schmugge and Albrittion assisted on two of Amorose's goals, while Berg recorded an assist as well on Francesconi's lone goal of the day.
Rutgers-Newark scored a pair of goals in the final four minutes to make the score a little closer as one came on a penalty kick as the Eagles emptied the bench in in the middle of the second half.Â
